ABOUT PLYWOOD NEW YORK

This website is devoted to preserving images of New York City during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.  For many weeks in a manner unprecedented in history, the streets, sidewalks and plazas of the city became devoid of humans.  Then, quite disturbingly, after Memorial Day and the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, political unrest quickly developed and business owners took to boarding up and sometimes barricading their buildings.  This was another sight previously unseen in the city, particularly in the wealthier business and residential neighborhoods of Manhattan.  As people began to return to the streets, the plywood remained up in shop windows, sometimes for a few weeks, sometimes only a few days. That fleeting moment in time is documented with these images.
